Last Sunday, January 28th, was a day of many firsts: the first music event of the year, my first online performance, and my first time singing in Korean in public. I also got to test out a new original song on an audience, though I will have to work some more on it before I am ready to share it with more people. As for my performance in Korean, I would like to share how it went. The song I sang is titled «충분해» («You’re Fine») and was written by singer-songwriter and guitarist 자이로 (Zai.ro).

As the performance was audio only, I added some video clips I took while in South Korea last summer.

Søndag som var, 28. januar, vart det fleire fyrste gongar. Det var mi fyrste musikkhending i 2024, men òg fyrste live-opptreden på nett nokon sinne og fyrste gong eg freista syngje på koreansk. Dessutan fekk eg testa ut ein heilt ny, tidlegare udelt song på eit pulikum. Den nyskrivne musikken lyt modnast og bearbeidast litt til, men eg tenkte eg kunne dele lydopptaket av den koreanske songen eg framførte. Songen heiter «충분해» («You’re Fine») og er skriven av 자이로 (Zai.ro). Filmklippa er frå i sommar, då eg var på inspirasjonsreise i Sør-Korea.

These past few of months I got a bit sidetracked by other arts and aspects of life, but eventually I got the last bit of home recording done so that my sound engineer could finish up the tracks for the record. We’re already over half-way through the last month of the year, but the Sketches EP is now completely finished and will be released in one week!

Dei siste månadane har tankane og tida vore heft med andre prosjekt og planer. Men for litt sidan fekk eg spelt inn dei resterande brotstykka i heimestudioet, og endeleg er EPen Sketches ferdig, Om ei veke kjem han ut på alle digitale musikkplattformer!

First day of recording the Sketches EP is a wrap! And this might be a good time to tell you some more about the project.

Sketches differs from Early Works in many ways, but mainly in the fact that the five tracks on the new EP are all instrumentals. Even though I primarily see myself as a singing songwriter, I wanted to challenge myself to make a record where the focus is on my guitar(s). And since my playing style doesn’t always fit with my voice or the lyrical landscape where I tend to wander, I let my vocal cords rest during this EP (but I’ll bring them along on my next project!).

To get a fuller sound (and undeniably because it gave me an excuse to work with two of my talented musician friends), I brought in organist Marthe Aa on the piano and spelemann Lars Holme on the accordion. I am really grateful that these two skilled and knowledgeable instrumentalists agreed to join this EP project. Without them, the melodies on Sketches would remain just that: sketches.

Då er fyrste innspelingsdag til Sketches over, og det kan høve å dele litt meir om prosjektet.

Sketches skil seg frå Early Works på fleire måtar, men den største forskjellen ligg nok i at dei fem låtane på EPen er instrumentalar. Sjølv om eg i hovudsak ser på meg sjølv som ein syngjande låtskrivar, hadde eg lyst til å utfordre meg sjølv til å lage eit prosjekt der gitaren – eller, rettare sagt, gitarane – fekk vere i fokus. Og ettersom gitarspelinga mi ikkje alltid høver til stemma mi og det lyriske landskapet eg vanlegvis ferdast i, vart det til at eg let stemmebanda stå ubrukte på akkurat desse låtane (men dei kjem att ved neste høve!).

For å gjere lydbiletet fyldigare (og unekteleg fordi det gav meg eit påskot til å samarbeide med to dyktige musikarvener), fekk eg med meg organist Marthe Aa på piano og spelemann Lars Holme på trekkspel. Veldig takksam for at desse to kunnskapsrike og drivne instrumentalistane ville ta del i dette EP-prosjektet – utan dei hadde ikkje melodiane på Sketches blitt noko anna enn ubrukte låtskisser.

Since the release of Early Works last year, new songs have been piling up on top of the old ones. So, to avoid drowning in unreleased tunes, I’m working on a new EP titled Sketches.

I hope I’ll be able to get it recorded and released this summer, but we’ll see how long it takes to get the tunes right.

After more than half a year of planning and preparing the songs for the EP, the four days of recording passed by before I could really fathom what was going on. As I sat on the train back to Oslo, I wondered if it had even happened at all, or if I had just been imagining the whole thing. Fortunately, I had a few video clips on my phone, confirming that I had indeed been in the studio, working with my two producers to gather all the necessary sounds and tracks for the EP.

As my songs fly freely around the world, I thought I would let you join me in reminiscing about four of the most intense, nerve-wrecking and lovely consecutive days I’ve experienced this year.

Etter å ha planlagt og førebudd innspelinga av EPen i vel over eit halvt år, fór dei fire dagane i studio uhoverleg fort. Då eg sidan sat på toget attende til Oslo, tok eg til å lure på om eg faktisk hadde skjedd. Heldigvis låg der nokre filmsnuttar på mobilen som kunne stadfeste at det ikkje berre var innbilling: Eg hadde faktisk vore i studio, og arbeidd saman med produsentane mine om å ta opp alle lydspor og lydar som etter kvart skulle setjast saman til dei fire låtane på EPen.

No når låtane mine flyt fritt i verda, tenkte eg at eg ville ta dykk med på ei mimreferd tilbake til dei fire mest intense, nervepirrande og herlege dagane eg har hatt dette året.

The EP project pushed me out of my comfort zone in more than one way. The thing that undoubtedly held the most potential discomfort for me was the portrait photography and teaser filming. I had very clear ideas about what kinds of pictures and clips I wanted, but I had no clue as to whether or not I would be able to clearly communicate and do what I envisioned.

My worries about the photoshoot subsided somewhat after contacting and meeting with photographer Johanne Nyborg (whose work I have admired since our high school days). Then, as she found and showed me potential locations and we settled some more of the details, I actually started to look forward to the photo and film session. On the day of the shoot the weather was gorgeous, providing good natural light and making it less troublesome to carry a wooden chair across town. Add to that a photographer who is patient, attentive and creative, and I was actually able to enjoy myself in spite of my own awkwardness.

I løpet av EP-prosjektet laut eg i fleire høve trø utanfor mi eiga komfortsone. Det å skulle stå framfor kameraet var definitivt ein av dei tinga som hadde potensiale til å føre med seg mykje ubehag. Eg hadde ein temmeleg tydeleg idé om korleis eg ville at artistportretta og teaser-videoane skulle sjå ut, men eg var usikker på om eg ville klare å vidareformidle det eg hadde tenkt ut.

Den verste uroa forsvann heldigvis etter at eg hadde teke kontakt og hatt planleggjingsmøte med Johanne Nyborg (som for øvrig har vore ein favorittfotograf sidan vi gjekk på vidaregåande). Etter kvart som ho fann høvelege lokale til fotograferinga og vi fekk på plass endå fleire detaljar, tok eg faktisk til å sjå fram til hendinga. Ypparleg vêr med gode lysforhold og knirkefri stoltransport gjennom byen gjorde sitt til at eg kunne senke herdane då dgen var der. Men det aller viktigaste i so måte, var ei tolmodig, merksam og kreativ Johanne. Innimellom kleine augneblinkar, klarte eg faktisk å nyte dagen.

I rarely find the time to pick up my paints and brushes. When I found myself in need of a picture for the cover of my EP, however, I decided I would allow myself a few hours at the easel. You have already seen the product, but I thought I would share the process as well.

Eg tek meg sjeldan tid til å finne fram malekostar og malingstuber. Men då eg var i beit for eit bilete til EP-omslaget, bestemte eg meg for å unne meg nokre timar framfor staffeliet. De har allereie sett resultatet av arbeidet, men eg tenkte eg ville syne dykk prosessen òg.
