First day of recording the Sketches EP is a wrap! And this might be a good time to tell you some more about the project.
Sketches differs from Early Works in many ways, but mainly in the fact that the five tracks on the new EP are all instrumentals. Even though I primarily see myself as a singing songwriter, I wanted to challenge myself to make a record where the focus is on my guitar(s). And since my playing style doesn’t always fit with my voice or the lyrical landscape where I tend to wander, I let my vocal cords rest during this EP (but I’ll bring them along on my next project!).
To get a fuller sound (and undeniably because it gave me an excuse to work with two of my talented musician friends), I brought in organist Marthe Aa on the piano and spelemann Lars Holme on the accordion. I am really grateful that these two skilled and knowledgeable instrumentalists agreed to join this EP project. Without them, the melodies on Sketches would remain just that: sketches.

Sketches skil seg frå Early Works på fleire måtar, men den største forskjellen ligg nok i at dei fem låtane på EPen er instrumentalar. Sjølv om eg i hovudsak ser på meg sjølv som ein syngjande låtskrivar, hadde eg lyst til å utfordre meg sjølv til å lage eit prosjekt der gitaren – eller, rettare sagt, gitarane – fekk vere i fokus. Og ettersom gitarspelinga mi ikkje alltid høver til stemma mi og det lyriske landskapet eg vanlegvis ferdast i, vart det til at eg let stemmebanda stå ubrukte på akkurat desse låtane (men dei kjem att ved neste høve!).
For å gjere lydbiletet fyldigare (og unekteleg fordi det gav meg eit påskot til å samarbeide med to dyktige musikarvener), fekk eg med meg organist Marthe Aa på piano og spelemann Lars Holme på trekkspel. Veldig takksam for at desse to kunnskapsrike og drivne instrumentalistane ville ta del i dette EP-prosjektet – utan dei hadde ikkje melodiane på Sketches blitt noko anna enn ubrukte låtskisser.
